(Note from Sarah: I can't remember how many times I repeated the pattern in the sample but the finished object measures 5 x 14cm. It is made with crochet rayon on 3mm needles).  
Cast on 15 stitches.  

Row 1 and 3 (wrong side): slip 1 as if to knit with yarn in back, purl to the last stitch, k1.  (Stitch count is different on rows 1 & 3).  

Row 2: Slip 1 as if to knit with yarn in back, k1, yo, k2tog, SSK, (yo, k1) 3x, yo, k2tog, SSK, yo, k2.  

Row 4: Slip 1 as if to knit with yarn in back, k1, yo, k2tog, SSK, k5, k2tog, SSK, yo, k2.  

Repeat rows 1-4 for the pattern.  Do 25 pattern repeats (about 10"), or work to desired length.  Work row 1 for a last time, then bind off in purl on the right side.

Pattern:

A very satisfactory method of knitting a circular piece is employed in this handsome table set.

Stitches equal to the radius of the piece are cast on and the knitting is done back and forth, first from centre to circumference, then back to centre. Each odd row begins at the centre with sl 1. Each even row begins at circumference with a knitted stitch, and toward the centre a number of stitches are left unknitted on the left-hand needle. This number is always the same as the number of the row in hand. For example, at the end of the second row two stitches are left, at the end of the fourth row four stitches are left.

In the last row of the section, after 4 or 5 (whatever the number) are bound off, the stitches are all knit down to the centre and one begins with the first row again. The section is repeated a given number of times and the entire row is bound off at the last row of the last section. The edges are overcast together and with needle and thread the centre stitches are drawn close.

Jim has knit this cloth using size 10 crochet cotton and US size 5 (3.75mm) needles to produce a cloth 72 inches in diameter.

I have knit this cloth using 2000m of size 8 mercerized cotton (Coats Petra 8) and size 3.25mm needles to produce a cloth approximately 60 inches in diameter (I hadn&#39;t fully blocked it at the time of writing this).

Addendum June 19th 2006: This pattern has now been corrected, updated, test-knit and charted! Please let me know if I have made any typos in the written directions.

If you want to make this doily as a shawl you will need approximately 2000m (2200 yards) of lace weight yarn and 3.25mm needles. The finished shawl will measure approximately 5-6ft in diameter depending on the fibre content of the yarn used and the amount of force put into blocking.

From the instructions given below it is possible to make the following:
6 x 6 inch glass mat
9 x 9 inch doily
13 x 13 inch place mat
18 x 18 and 22 x 22 inch centres
and a supper cloth measuring 36 x 36 inches if using the size 60 mercerized cotton and size 1mm needles stated in the pattern

Materials Required:
Semco Fairy Knitting Cotton, White or Linen shade. (Mercerised cotton #60)
Set of 5 Semco Fairy knitting needles (1mm double pointed needles)
Semco Steel Crochet Hook 7 or 8 (0.75mm or 0.6mm)

Helpful Hints:
If a mistake is made repair immediately, control your work when knitting the plain rounds, to prevent mistakes. To make it easier to follow directions place a small safety pin where your pattern round commences and more as you work.

To prevent the needles from slipping out of the work, secure all ends (of needles) with tiny pieces of rubber: THIS IS IMPORTANT. IF A STITCH SLIPS OFF NEEDLE put work flat on your knee and with crochet hook, crochet the stitches in pattern up to the round you are working. If many stitches have slipped off, take out needles, starch and spread work carefully on towel to dry, keeping as flat as possible, then undo (counting the rounds) until you come to the place from where the stitches have commenced to run, insert needles again and proceed from directions; the stitches will not run when they are starched.
Do not knit loosely on the four corners when you change the needle or you will make holes in your work.

DIRECTIONS FOR WORKING:

Stop at end of Rounds 40, 72, 104, 144 and 170 for 6x6, 9x9, 13x13, and 22x22 inch cloths. Full instructions will make a cloth 36x36 inches in diameter.

TO COMMENCE:

With crochet hook make a ring of 8 chain. Into this work 12 d.c.
Having 1 st on hook insert into the first dc, draw working thread through this, and the stitch on the hook, leaving 1 st on hook; insert into next d.c. draw thread through, then throw around hook and draw through other st on hook, carefully remove hook from these two sts, leave the first free and  replace the other on hook: repeat until you have 12 loose loops around ring.
Then insert 4 knitting needles through the 12 sts, placing 3 sts on each needle, holding the work carefully between thumb and forefinger to prevent from slipping; ADD SMALL PIECES OF RUBBER TO ENDS OF EACH NEEDLE

Repeat each row of instructions until you reach the end of the round.

The large mat illustrated is comprised of eight medallions sewn together.

Materials:
Two skeins of pale blue,
one skein of pale yellow,
and four skeins of light ecru shade in embroidery cotton (I&#39;m guessing this is the same thickness as #20 mercerised cotton after seeing the range of vintage embroidery cottons available in local antique stores and considering the size of the needles used),
a set of four No.14 (2mm) double pointed knitting needles,
and a no 14 (2mm) crochet hook.

Abbreviations:
M = make (yarn over)
tog = together
increase 2 or more = knit 1, purl 1 into the m 1 loop for number of sts stated
k = kni
st = stitch
rep = repeat
dc = double crochet
ch = chain

Method:
Using yellow thread and crochet hook work 5 ch and join into a ring.

Work 5 dc into a ring and join with a slip-st.

Next Round: work 2 dc into 1 dc, 1 dc into next all round (8 dc)

Next Round: Work 2 dc into each dc (16 dc)

Cut yellow and fasten securely.
Join in blue and, using the crochet hook, pick up 6 sts around the ring and place on the first knitting needle.

Pick up four more sts and place on the second knitting needle.

Pick up 6 sts and place on
the third knitting needle.

Now use the fourth knitting needle and k the 16 sts.

Commence the petals as follows:

1st Round: * M1, k2tog, Rep from * to end.

2nd Round: * Increase 2 sts, k1. Rep from * to end.

3rd Round: * K1, m1, k2. Rep from * to end.

4th Round: * K1, increase 2 sts, k 2. Rep from * to end.

5th Round: * K2, m1, k3. Rep from * to end.

6th Round: * K2, increase 2 sts, k3. Rep from * to end.

7th Round: * K1, k2 tog, m1, k2tog, k2. Rep from * to end.

8th Round: * K2tog, m1, k3tog, k1. Rep from * to end.

9th Round: K1 st and slip it on to the right needle, then cut the blue thread and fasten securely.
Join on the ecru shade and pick up the thread from the earlier m1, and into this double thread * increase 8 sts, k3tog, increase 3 sts (in the double thread), k3tog. Rep from * to end.

10th Round : K.

11th Round: * M1, k2tog, k2, m1, k2, k2tog, m1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, Rep from * to end.

12th Round : * K4, increase 6, k7. Rep from * to end.

13th Round : * M1, k2tog, k2, m1, k6, m1, k2, k2tog, m1, k3tog. Rep from * to end.

14th Round : Cast off very loosely, using a No. 9 needle to ensure looseness.

Make seven more medallions and sew together neatly.

Make four medallions each for the smaller mats and join in the same manner.

The edge is worked in crochet in ecru shade.

1st Round: Join thread, then 6 ch, miss 1 st, 1 dc into next all round.

2nd Round: Slip st to centre of first ch loop. * 6 ch, 1 dc into centre of next loop. Rep from * all round.

Put through weak starch and press.

This table centre is from an unknown Australian newspaper from somewhere in the 1940&#39;s to 50. I have updated the knitting terms used throughout to make it easier to understand.

As a change from the usual crocheted table centrepiece here is an attractive knitted one which measures 11  inches in diameter.

Materials:
No. 20 mercer cotton
a set of four No. 13 needles, preferably steel, as the finer gauges in bone generally tend to break.

Abbreviations:
K = knit;
P = purl;
YO = Yarn Over;
YO2 = Yarn over twice;
Sl1 = slip one stitch;
tog = together;
PSSO - pass the slipped stitch over.

Method:

I think these doilies are rather Christmassy and would look really pretty at a Christmas table setting. Just make sure to leave room for the turkey
These mats look crisp and fresh on polished tables. They are easy to launder and can be ironed in a jiffy. The large mats may also serve as tray-cloths and the glass mats as d&#39;oyleys. Eight balls of cotton make a setting for four.

Worked on four needles and finished with an easy crochet edging, this lacy knitted cotton set is long-lasting and serviceable.

Materials:
8 balls of Coats Chain Mercer Cotton no 20 (20gm)
One set of Milwards double pointed knitting needles No 13;
Milwards steel crochet hook No 3

Measurements:
Place-mat: 12 inches in diameter;
