In Victorian days, ladies would crochet with their thread tucked tidily inside one of these enchanting thread holders. Stitch one for yourself and enjoy this old-time tradition!

5 1/4 inches wide x 9 inches tall including wrist strap, to hold 1 (50-gram) ball of crochet thread
Materials
Crochet cotton size 10* (325 yds per ball): 1 ball ecru #0061
Size 7 steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
2 (1-inch) plastic rings
*Sample project was completed with J&P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen cotton thread by Coats & Clark.
Gauge
Rnds 1-5 = 2 1/2 inches in diameter
To save time, take time to check gauge.
Pattern Note
Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.
Pattern Stitches
Pc: 5 dc in indicated sp or st, drop lp from hook, insert hook from RS to WS in top of first dc, pick up dropped lp, draw through st on hook.
4-dc cl: Holding back on hook last lp of each st, dc in each of next 4 sts, yo, draw through all 5 lps on hook.
Beg 3-dc cl: Ch 2, holding back on hook last lp of each st, dc in each of next 3 sts, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook.
V-st: [Dc, ch 2, dc] in indicated st or sp.
Beg V-st: [Ch 5, dc] in indicated st or sp.
P: Ch 3, sl st in last sc made.
Cl: Holding back on hook last lp of each st, 4 tr in indicated st or sp, yo, draw through all 5 lps on hook.
Shell: [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in indicated st or sp.
First Side
Rnd 1 (RS): Sl st over plastic ring, ch 1, work 48 sc over ring, join in beg sc. (48 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 7 (counts as first hdc, ch-5), [sk 5 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 5] rep around, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-7. (8 ch-5 sps)
Rnd 3: [Sc, 9 dc, sc] in each ch-5 sp around, do not join. (8 petals)
Rnd 4: Working behind petals, sc in 2nd ch of beg ch-7 of Rnd 2, ch 6, [sc in next unworked hdc of Rnd 2, ch 6] rep around, join in beg sc. (8 ch-6 sps)
Rnd 5: [Sc, dc, 9 tr, dc, sc] in each ch-6 sp around, do not join. (8 petals)

Second Side
Rnds 1-13: Rep Rnds 1-13 of first side.
Join Sides
Rnd 14: Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 2, sl st in a corresponding ch-4 lp on first side, ch 2, sc in next sp on 2nd side, [ch 2, sl st in next ch-4 lp on first side, ch 2, sc in next sp on 2nd side] 29 times, [ch 4, sc in next sp on 2nd side] 17 times, ch 4, join in beg sc, fasten off. (18 free ch-4 lps on each side)
Wrist Strap
Row 1: With RS facing, sk first 7 free ch-4 lps from joining at right side of first side, attach thread with a sl st in next ch-4 lp, ch 1, sc in same lp, [ch 4, sc in next lp] 3 times, turn.
Row 2: [Ch 4, sc in next ch-4 lp] 3 times, turn.
Rep Row 2 until wrist strap measures approximately 9 inches, ending with a WS row; do not fasten off; turn.
Last Row: Ch 2, sl st in 8th free ch-4 lp from joining on corresponding side of 2nd side, ch 2, sc in first ch-4 lp on wrist strap, [ch 2, sl st in next ch-4 lp on 2nd side, ch 2, sc in next ch-4 lp on wrist strap] twice, ch 2, sl st in next ch-4 lp on 2nd side, fasten off.
Edging
With RS facing, sk first 7 free ch-4 lps on the top of first side to the right of wrist strap, attach thread with a sl st in next lp to the right, ch 1, 3 sc in same lp, p, *[3 sc in next free ch-4 lp, p] 7 times *; working over row ends across wrist strap, [3 sc over next row end, p] rep across to opposite end of wrist strap, rep from * to *, [3 sc, p] in next lp, join in beg sc, fasten off.
Rep on opening on opposite side of wrist strap. |
